Safe Internet Day
Tuesday Feb 7th, 2017
Safer Internet Day is Tuesday, February 7
This year’s theme is “Be the change: unite for a better internet” .
From cyberbullying to social networking, or from protecting your privacy to protecting young people each year Safer Internet Day aims to raise awareness of emerging online issues and chooses topics that reflect today’s top concerns.
The COB Cyber Security Team joins our “Safer Internet Day” partners by providing the following links and tips:
Power up your passwords :
One of the easiest ways you can protect yourself online is by using strong passwords. Think of online passwords as the key that unlocks a vault of private information about you. Keep your information locked away safely using these tips.
Make your password at least 15 characters’ long
Use a phrase instead of a word
Use a different password for each account
Try using lyrics from a song you’ll remember
Don’t use your name, your kids or your pets name
Change your password every three months
Talk regularly with your children about how they use technology, and find out what their digital life is like, including how they communicate using images and videos. Perhaps you can start off by discussing your favorite emoji?
Explore the online features of the devices you already own in your family and the devices you might buy for your child in the future. Knowing how to activate and use parental controls can help protect your child from seeing inappropriate content online.
The internet provides a platform for billions of people to share their views and opinions but not everything or everyone online is trustworthy. Encourage your children to think critically about the things they see online including the images and videos they view on social media. Discussing what they have seen and the message behind a photo or a video can help them consider the difference between fact and opinion, and that there is sometimes more than meets the eye.
